The time the die is touching the surface of the material. Longer dwell times can change the colour of the material (if themo reactive). The longer the dwell the darker the colour change. Dwell time is crucial when foiling as too long will allow the foil to bleed giving an uneven messy edge and too shorter dwell gives a patchy broken foil finish.
